In moments of turmoil and uncertainty, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by your emotions. It’s natural to experience sadness or anger, even both. But don’t forget about the other important things in life — self-care and wellness. Here are some tips to help you create healthy goals while grieving.

Don’t Skimp on Sleep

One of the best things you can do for yourself while grieving is to get enough sleep. Without enough quality rest, your body and mind can struggle to cope with stress. Consider going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends.

Also, avoid using caffeine, alcohol, and your smartphone before bed. Everyone’s guilty of it, but scrolling your social media feed or tapping away in conversations doesn’t help you get the sleep necessary for healing.

Eat Well

Food can play a significant role in how you feel. Eating nutritious foods helps your body cope with stress and promotes healing. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet.

Visit a farmers market to buy fresh fruit and a wide selection of green vegetables that are excellent for wellness.

Avoid processed foods and sugary drinks. Instead, drink plenty of water, and consider replacing coffee and soda with herbal tea.

Stay Fit

Regular exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. Exercise also helps improve your overall physical health, which can be beneficial when grieving. It doesn’t need to be strenuous — a simple walk around the block is sufficient. If you’re not used to exercising, start slowly and build up your stamina.

Keep a Healthy Home

When you’re feeling down, getting more light can help. Sunshine exposure helps boost serotonin levels, which can improve your mood. If you can’t get outside, try to let more natural light into your home. Open blinds and curtains, and consider buying light-filtering window coverings to help let in more sunshine.

Another idea is to improve your living environment by decluttering and reorganizing to help you keep focused and relaxed. A happier house with an area for self-care can boost your recovery.
